Pivot Points are horizontal levels — a central pivot (P) plus resistance (R1, R2…) and support
(S1, S2…) — that traders use as reference points for the day. Unlike most popular tools, MT4 has no
built-in Pivot Points indicator, so you add it as a free custom indicator. The central
pivot is calculated as P = (High + Low + Close) ÷ 3 from the previous period, with the other levels
derived from it.
How to add Pivot Points in MT4
Because there's no built-in version, you won't find Pivot Points under Insert ▸ Indicators. Instead,
install a free custom indicator file — the same way you'd add any other. For the full walkthrough, see
how to install indicators on MT4.
-
Download a pivot points indicator
MT4 has no built-in Pivot Points indicator, so download a free custom one — a
.ex4(compiled) or.mq4(source) file. -
Open the data folder
In MT4, click
File ▸ Open Data Folder, then openMQL4 ▸ Indicatorsand copy the pivot file into that folder. -
Restart MT4 and attach it
Restart MT4 (or refresh the Navigator). The indicator now appears under
Navigator ▸ Custom Indicators— drag it onto your chart and click OK.
How to read Pivot Points
Pivot points give you a ladder of levels around a central pivot. Most indicators plot daily pivots, recalculated each day from the previous day's high, low, and close:
- The central pivot (P) —
(High + Low + Close) ÷ 3. Price trading above P is often read as the bias being bullish for the session; below P, bearish. - Resistance levels (R1, R2…) — derived from the pivot, e.g.
R1 = 2P − Low. Areas where an advancing price has tended to stall. - Support levels (S1, S2…) — the mirror, e.g.
S1 = 2P − High. Areas where a falling price has tended to find buyers. - Reactions, not guarantees — traders watch for bounces or breaks at these levels, but a level holding or breaking is never certain.
Limitations
Pivot points only describe where price reacted before — they don't predict where it will go, and in a strong trend price can blow straight through several levels. They're also calculation-method dependent (standard, Fibonacci, Camarilla and Woodie's pivots all differ). Treat them as one input among several, always with a stop loss, and test them on a demo. Nothing here is financial advice, and most retail traders lose money.

Frequently asked questions
Does MT4 have a built-in Pivot Points indicator?
No. MT4 has no built-in Pivot Points indicator — you won't find it under Insert ▸ Indicators. You add it as a free custom indicator: drop a .ex4 or .mq4 file into the MQL4/Indicators folder (File ▸ Open Data Folder), restart MT4, then attach it from Navigator ▸ Custom Indicators.
How do I add Pivot Points to MT4?
Download a free pivot points custom indicator, then click File ▸ Open Data Folder, open MQL4 ▸ Indicators, and copy the file in. Restart MT4 and the indicator appears under Navigator ▸ Custom Indicators, ready to drag onto a chart.
How are MT4 pivot points calculated?
The central pivot is P = (High + Low + Close) ÷ 3, using the previous period's range. Resistance and support are derived from it: R1 = 2P − Low, S1 = 2P − High, R2 = P + (High − Low), S2 = P − (High − Low), and so on. Daily pivots (using yesterday's high, low, and close) are the most common.
What is the best pivot points timeframe?
Daily pivots — calculated from the previous day's high, low, and close — are the most widely used, especially by intraday traders. Weekly and monthly pivots suit longer-term charts. There's no single best setting; test it on a demo for the instrument and timeframe you trade.
Are pivot points a reliable buy/sell signal?
No indicator is a reliable signal on its own. Pivot points are reference levels that describe where price has reacted before — they don't predict where it will go. They work best alongside trend analysis and risk management. Most retail traders lose money.
Trading foreign exchange and contracts for difference (CFDs) carries a high level of risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Leverage can work against you as well as for you. You could lose some or all of your deposited funds; do not trade with money you cannot afford to lose. Past performance is not indicative of future results.
