The CCI (Commodity Channel Index) is a built-in MT4 momentum oscillator. The MT4 CCI indicator measures how far price has moved from its statistical average and oscillates around a zero line — readings above +100 point to strong upward momentum (often called overbought), below -100 to oversold. Despite the name, it is used on any instrument, not just commodities, and traders also watch it for divergence.
How to add the CCI in MT4
-
Open the indicator
In MT4, click
Insert ▸ Indicators ▸ Oscillators ▸ Commodity Channel Index. -
Set the period
Leave the period at the default 14 or adjust it. Many traders add horizontal levels at +100 and -100 on the Levels tab.
-
Click OK
The CCI plots in a separate window below your chart, oscillating around a zero line.
How to read the CCI
- +100 / -100 levels — above +100 hints at strong upward momentum (overbought); below -100 at oversold. Neither is a guaranteed reversal.
- The zero line — the CCI crossing above zero suggests momentum is turning up; crossing below zero, down.
- Divergence — price making a new high while the CCI doesn't can warn of weakening momentum.
- Any market — despite "Commodity" in the name, it works on forex, indices, and stocks too.
Limitations
In a strong trend the CCI can sit above +100 (or below -100) for a long time — selling just because it looks "overbought" is a classic mistake. The CCI describes recent momentum; it doesn't predict price. Treat it as one input among several, always with a stop loss, and test it on a demo. Nothing here is financial advice, and most retail traders lose money.

Frequently asked questions
What is the CCI (Commodity Channel Index)?
The Commodity Channel Index (CCI) is a momentum oscillator that measures how far price has moved from its statistical average. Despite the name it works on any instrument, not just commodities. Readings above +100 point to strong upward momentum (often called overbought) and below -100 to oversold.
How do I add the CCI in MT4?
Click Insert ▸ Indicators ▸ Oscillators ▸ Commodity Channel Index, set the period (default 14), and click OK. The CCI appears in a sub-window beneath the chart, oscillating around a zero line. Many traders add levels at +100 and -100.
What do the +100 and -100 levels mean?
A reading above +100 signals strong upward momentum and is often called overbought; below -100 signals strong downward momentum, or oversold. They flag potential exhaustion, but in a strong trend the CCI can stay beyond +100 or -100 for a long time, so they are not automatic reversal signals.
What is the best CCI setting?
The default 14-period CCI is the most widely used. Shorter periods react faster and give more signals; longer ones are smoother. There is no single best setting — test it on a demo for the instrument and timeframe you trade.
Is the CCI only for commodities?
No. Despite its name, the CCI is a general-purpose momentum oscillator and traders apply it to forex, indices, and stocks as well as commodities. The CCI describes recent momentum — it does not predict price, and no indicator guarantees a profit. Most retail traders lose money.
